Bumblebee - Prevent burglary
The Metropolitan Police Service are launching a campaign to remind Londoners that there are simple measures that they can take to reduce the risk of being a target for burglars.
Operation Bumblebee is the Met’s campaign to tackle burglars head on. The campaign will run from 31st October until the 20th November to coincide with the shortening autumn days. Our figures show that there is a trend for burglary to increase when the clocks go back in autumn and to continue to rise until the clocks go forward again in the spring. During this period residential properties remain in darkness for much longer periods which makes them easier for burglars to target, especially if there are no obvious signs that there is anyone home.
This pan-London campaign consists of radio adverts and posters on the underground, as well as adverts in local press and direct mail in six priority boroughs. The crime prevention messages are aimed at encouraging Londoners to take simple steps to make their homes less attractive to burglars. The campaign encourages people to go to the website to get further crime prevention advice and to find out how the Met is tackling burglary.
The Met is using QR codes on this campaign, which will allow people to access burglary prevention advice via their mobile devices.
There are three poster executions with reminders to lock doors and windows and keep valuables out of sight and away from the letterbox.
There are two radio adverts that will air across London on Capital London, Magic 105.4, Choice FM London, and Sunrise Radio. The 40 second ads are designed to make the listener consider the steps that can be taken to deter a burglar.
The press ads and direct mail are specifically aimed at six priority boroughs, Croydon, Brent, Barnet, Enfield, Redbridge, and Ealing, where burglary is seen as a key issue. The direct mail flyers carry our top ten tips that residents can follow to make their homes more secure.
