Burglary Operation reduces crime in Herne Hill
23 February 2012
Four weeks of targeted action within burglary hot spots in Herne Hill SE24 has seen a dramatic reduction in crimes reported and 24 arrests made.
The operation led by Herne Hill Safer Neighbourhoods Team (SNT) in partnership with Norwood Local Policing Team ran from 23/01/12 to 17/02/12 and consisted of multiple tactics involving plain clothed patrols, high visibility policing, a drugs dog mobilised at Herne Hill rail station and automatic number plate recognition (ANPR) technology among other methods used.
"We ask the public to protect themselves by using basic crime prevention measures"
Two weeks prior to the operation Herne Hill had 14 burglaries reported to police; this figure was reduced to two burglaries committed, in the duration of the four weeks.
The arrests made included; individuals wanted on warrant, handling stolen goods, drug offences and breach of bail among other offences.
Twelve vehicles were seized as a result of the ANPR activity and numerous signs displayed around the area to highlight the focus around burglary.
Officers distributed burglary crime prevention pacts to homes in hot spot areas while discussing important crime prevention tips and advice to residents.
Sergeant Tony Dodd of Herne Hill SNT comments; “After four weeks of targeted work we are pleased with the results we have achieved.
We have employed a relentless deployment of tactics and skills to hopefully achieve significant, long term crime reductions to bring about an overall improvement in public confidence and their feelings of safety.
We ask the public to support our work by protecting themselves from becoming a victim of crime by taking some basic prevention measures”.
