Hackney’s Robbery Squad are asking residents to consider installing the ‘Find My iPhone’ app on to their Apple iPhone, iPod touch, Ipad or Mac.

The app allows victims and officers to trace a stolen Apple product following a robbery, snatch or theft. The victim enters login details and the appliance can then be traced using a Global Positioning System (GPS) within the app.

"I would strongly recommend that owners of Apple products consider installing this fee application."

Over the past few weeks officers have used it to trace stolen phones, on one occasion locating it within an hour of the offence being reported.

Recently, officers were called to Manor House tube station following reports of a robbery, where the victim had been robbed of his iPhone. The victim had installed the app ‘Find My iPhone’. Using an officer’s iPhone the victim logged in to his account. The phone picked up a signal and officers were able to follow the GPS along Green Lanes, where the suspect was identified and arrested. The stolen phone was recovered.

Another example of the successful use of this App resulted in the return of a stolen Apple Mac computer.

The victim was using his computer in McDonalds in the Narrow Way, Hackney. He left the restaurant and began walking home. Shortly into his journey he was robbed of his computer. Officers attended the scene and used their own mobile phones to track the property, which was found some 10 minutes walk away. The suspect was located and subsequently arrested and later charged with robbery.

DS Collin Hill, from Hackney’s Robbery Squad, said: “In both these cases the recovery of the property was directly attributable to the installation of the app ‘Find my iPhone’. I would strongly recommend that owners of Apple products consider installing this fee application. If in the unlikely event you are a victim of crime, this App can greatly enhance the chances of us recovering your property and arresting the perpetrator.”
