Police at the Vauxhall helicoptor crash

Police were alerted at approximately 08.00hrs on Wednesday 16 January regarding an incident at Wandsworth Road, SW8.

Commander Neil Basu, speaking at the scene said;

"We are not going to repeat what we already talked about this morning other than to say once again from all the Emergency Services our condolences to the families of the two fatalities involved today. There will be an update on casualties from the Ambulance Service and the Fire Brigade would like to say something as well."

"Can I pay some tributes to the Emergency Services response this morning which was rapid professional and it is something of a miracle that it was not many many times worse given the time of day that this happened. Thank you very much to the public for assisting us in making sure that we could preserve this scene and make it safe.

"Our aim now is to get this back to normality as quickly as possible. Our job will be to make sure that the Fire Brigade and most importantly the air investigation branch who are on scene now and will take primacy on leading on the investigation".

Commander Neil Basu, speaking at the scene of this morning’s incident, said:

"Police were alerted at approximately 8am, by a member of the public, to an incident in Wandsworth Rd SW8. At this stage it appears a commercial helicopter on a scheduled flight was in collision with a crane on top of a building under construction in Nine Elms Road SW8. The helicopter came down on the land next to the building.

"London Ambulance Service, London Fire Brigade and units from the Metropolitan Police Service are in attendance. All fires are now extinguished.

"We can confirm two fatalities and at this stage we are aware of a further 9 people injured. The London Ambulance Service will update with further details.

"Road closures are in place locally. Vauxhall Tube and Vauxhall bus station are also closed, and there are also closures on the main lines.

"We are working with our partners from the London Fire Brigade and the London Ambulance Service and the Air Investigation Branch of the CAA are on route. As soon as we have more information we will release further details."

Police were alerted at approximately 08.00hrs on Wednesday 16 January regarding an incident at Wandsworth Road, SW8.

At this early stage it appears a helicopter was in collision with a crane on top of a building.

Metropolitan Police officers, the ambulance service and the London Fire Brigade have attended.

We are aware of 11 casualties:

  • Two people have been confirmed dead at the scene. We have no further details.
  • One person has been taken to a south London hospital in a critical condition.
  • Five people have been taken to hospitals with minor injuries.
  • Four people have been treated at the scene.

There are a number of road closures in place following the incident this morning in Wandsworth Road.

These include:

  • Vauxhall Bridge Road southbound
  • Wandsworth Road (partially)
  • Nine Elms Lane (partially)
  • South Lambeth Road (partially)
