Man arrested in connection with assassination

Officers from the Metropolitan Police Service and Cambridgeshire Police, have this morning (7.7.11) arrested a man wanted by Spanish authorities in connection with the attempted assassination of the King of Spain, terrorism and other serious offences.

Spanish national Eneko Gogeaskoetxea ARRONATEGUI was arrested in an armed operation at 08.55 in Cambridge, Cambridgeshire, following a pro-active, intelligence-led operation.

The European Arrest Warrant states ARRONATEGUI is wanted for participation in an armed gang; attempted assassination of the King; terrorism resulting in death; possession of weapons; theft and forgery.

The offences are alleged to have taken place on 18/10/97.

Officers from the MPS Extradition Unit and armed officers from Cambridgeshire Police carried out the arrest. Searches by detectives from the MPS Counter Terrorism Command supported by local officers are taking place at one residential address and two business addresses in Cambridge.

ARRONATEGUI, 44, is due to appear at City of Westminster Magistrates Court this afternoon.
