Marine Policing Unit

It was a case of '#ahoythere' for the Marine Police Unit (MPU) yesterday as they made waves on Twitter, successfully managing to reel in over 1000 followers within hours of going live.

@MPSonthewater is the latest official Metropolitan Police Service (MPS) Twitter account and with such a unique geographical profile, the MPU's Twitter feed will endeavour to explain more about what they do, give crime prevention advice, offer crime fighting updates, engage with the many river based communities online, report successful activities and provide daily tide times from Richmond and Tower Bridge.

“We are very pleased to use Twitter and social media in general to keep Londoner's informed"

The MPU has responsibility for policing the 47 miles of the River Thames, from Dartford Creek to Staines Bridge. It also provides a specialist response to over 250 miles of canals and waterways, lakes and reservoirs all across London.

@MPSonthewater follows on from the success of @MPSinthesky which has amassed over 31'000 followers and regularly tweets spectacular aerial views of the capital whilst reporting on the day to day business of policing from the air.

Sergeant Fiona Fraser is delighted the MPU has now surfaced on Twitter. She is confident the unit's tweets will be up to the standard of its piers. She said:

“The MPU undertake a wide variety of policing functions suitable for tweeting, where appropriate. This includes the day to day business of response teams, as well as the activities of the Underwater and Confined Space Search teams, Tactical Response teams and high deployments performed by Line Access teams.

“We are very pleased to use Twitter and social media in general to keep Londoner's informed of the dedicated work that has been performed by the Marine Police Unit since 1798.

“The response so far from the public and partner agencies has been very positive and I'm certain @MPSonthewater will play a vital role in helping Londoner's understand our role in keeping the capital safe”

Members of the public and partner agencies are very pleased to see @MPSonthewater bobbing up on Twitter. Some of their comments have been floated below:
