Police are advising people to use maps instead of mobile phones to find their way around Carnival this year and use mobiles only when absolutely necessary.

All too often people become victims of criminals who snatch phones from people using them to find directions. To help combat this problem, police cadets will be handing out free maps at tube stations on both days of Carnival, Sunday 26th August and Monday 27th August.

"Mobile phones, especially expensive ones, are a glittering prize for thieves."

Commander Christine Jones said: “We want you to enjoy all the fantastic sights and sounds of the Carnival and not have your day blighted by crime. Mobile phones, especially expensive ones, are a glittering prize for thieves. Don’t give them a head start by displaying them openly and only use them if it’s absolutely necessary. Pick up one of our maps instead and pre arrange meeting points with family and friends.”

The maps, which also contain crime prevention advice, will be available at the following stations: Latimer Road, Shepherd’s Bush, Holland Park, Notting Hill Gate, Bayswater, Queensway, Royal Oak and Kensal Green.
