Six suspected jewellery robbers arrested

Following a series of robberies by an eastern European gang on jewelers in the north east London area Flying Squad officers (SC & O7) launched an investigation codenamed Operation Tiburon.

Today, Saturday 15 September, officers monitored the gang approaching a jewelers in Turnpike Lane, N8 armed with hammers. As they attempted to carry out the robbery they were apprehended by officers from the Flying Squad.

During the ensuing struggle, one of the gang attempted to attack an officer with a hammer. The man, along with the other gang members, was detained and all six men remain in custody at north London police stations. The officer was not injured.

Three of the gang members were tasered during the arrest but did not require hospital treatment.

During the arrest a 17 year old male, who was not part of the gang involved in the robbery, was also tasered. He was treated at the scene by London Ambulance Service but did not require hospital treatment. An Inspector at the scene spoke to the teenager to check on his welfare and apologise for the incident.

The Directorate of Professional Standards have been informed of the incident as is routine.
